Why Does A Dog Need Low Sodium Food?

Vets recommend low sodium foods to the dog having heart or kidney diseases, and the dog having heart or kidney disease needs to be placed on a low sodium food.

A dog with heart problems cannot pump all the blood his body needs. Plasma is the primary means of transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout the body.

Without these natural fuels, the dog’s organs and muscles do not function properly. The heart of the animal cannot return blood with oxygen and nutrients to the other body parts. This slow blood pumping explains why the body of a dog with heart problems works slowly.

Heart problems, such as heart failure, are not uncommon in dogs. Also, as in people, a dog grows old as he ages. According to an estimate, “60% of small dogs, such as the Chihuahua or the Yorkshire, suffer from a heart problem when they are over ten years old.”

Also, 20 to 40% of dogs suffer damage to the heart valves. These gates regulate the entry and exit of blood from this vital muscle.

But What Role Does Diet Have In The Dog’s Heart Health?

As in people, many of the heart problems in dogs are due to a less balanced diet.

A correct diet greatly reduces the probability that your dog will suffer from heart disease.

That is, feeding is the key to preventing heart problems in the dog. But it also helps the dog with heart ailments enjoy a better quality of life. Here are some tips and small changes in diet that help take care of the dog’s heart. Low sodium food is one of the important steps.

Animal Proteins To Feed The Dog’s Heart

Meat contains a tiny but essential substance to take care of the dog’s heart: taurine. This molecule feeds the cardiac cells of the animal. Additionally, it improves the canine heart’s ability to contract an essential movement to pump blood at its heart rate.

Therefore, to care for and feed the dog’s heart, the dog’s diet must contain animal proteins. That is fish, chicken, and cow, among other products. Check out the salmon dog food options.

The benefits of taurine for the dog’s heart have been studied by the Veterinary Cardiology Service of the University of Sacramento (USA). “Taurine deficiencies explain a good part of heart ailments in dogs,” conclude these researchers. The role of this small molecule “explains that dogs with heart problems may need to take a taurine supplement” You must consult your veterinarian to indicate the appropriate daily amount.

Why Low Sodium Food For Dogs?

When a Dog’s heart does not pump enough blood to its body, it needs other nutritional care. Consequently, it is necessary to reduce the amount of salt (sodium chloride) in the dog’s diet. “The salt increases the pressure on the heart of the animal, and this is disastrous.” Excess salt in the diet makes it even harder for the dog’s weakened heart to work. Therefore, diets that take care of the dog’s heart and overall health have low sodium levels. This nutrition reduces the extra load on the heart.

What Is Considered As Low Sodium For Dog Food?

Low sodium levels! That answers it.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials recommends dry dog foods contain at least 0.3% sodium. As per the estimates, 60 to 90 percent of dogs with chronic kidney disease also have some degree of high blood pressure or hypertension. Since high blood pressure can further harm the kidneys; additionally, foods that are high in salt (specifically, sodium) can increase blood pressure. It is therefore essential to feed a low sodium diet to dogs with kidney disease.

Choosing dog food is always a job that requires special attention. Food is a dog’s fuel, and a proper diet will help improve the furry friend’s quality of life. This recommendation is very relevant when the dog suffers from heart disease.

High-end foods often have food for dogs with heart problems.

Most of the commercial brands of high-end dog food have unique lines for dogs with heart problems.

These types of foods contain less sodium (salt) than usual. Besides, they include essential taurine.

Polyphenols, substances that vegetables naturally contain, are other components that strengthen the dog’s heart. The polyphenols help the heart-related health care of dogs and humans.

Loss Of Appetite In The Sick Animal

A dog with heart disease may suffer from a loss of appetite. For this reason, many foods designed for sick dogs come in the form of cans or wet diets and not as feed. This canned food is less attractive for dogs.

Choosing a homemade diet for your dog, provided a canine nutritionist or veterinarian supervises it, is another option for feeding a dog that suffers from heart problems. This possibility allows you to customize the dog’s menu and modify it, depending on each breed.

What Are Good Habits For The Dog’s Heart?

Exercise is key to keeping your dog’s heart in tip-top shape. An animal must walk at least 30 minutes a day. If you have a crazy busy schedule you can even consider a dog treadmill. Find an appropriate dog chain, collar, or harness for your dog’s treadmill exercise.

Regular physical activity also helps prevent obesity in the dog. Being overweight is dangerous for the dog and its heart. On average, between 20 and 40% of dogs are overweight.

You have to take care of a dog’s diet from its puppy stage. Adopting the dog’s diet to each of its vital phases is the best way to take care of its heart-health.

Small dogs have a faster metabolism: this explains that their heart problems are more frequent.

Flat dogs (brachycephalic) often have trouble breathing due to their head and muzzle’s unique constitution. For these animals, preventing and caring for heart ailments is even more relevant.

Offering a high-quality diet to the dog is essential to take care of its health; especially, when it suffers from a heart problem.

A veterinarian or canine nutritionist should always supervise the dog’s diet. In some cases, you could need dog to gain more weight.

Food For Dogs With Heart Problems

You may find persistent heart problems throughout a dog’s life. These health-related issues might make you consider switching to a proper diet. Many young dogs suffer from these complications as well. However, it is typical for elderly dogs to have heart problems.

Some Basics About Dog Food

Dogs have fewer taste buds than humans do. They are known to be able to differentiate between sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. Their sensitivity probably allows them to distinguish between “I love it,” “I like it,” and “I don’t care about it.” However, they show preferences for certain canine foods, rejecting others without regard. They usually have very defined likes and dislikes, and the most expensive foods are not always the tastiest for them.

Currently, the law requires dog food manufacturers to list the ingredients used on the packaging, which gives us a rough idea about the food quality. For example, the proteins present in dog food can come from products derived from meat, poultry, fish, soybeans, and cereals such as corn and wheat. These protein sources are not of the same quality or digestibility.

If the product’s name contains the words “beef, chicken, lamb, fish,” 95% of the product’s dry weight must have that protein source.

A quality diet must provide an adequate balance of essential amino acids. For that reason, the feed usually contains a sufficient balance between plant and animal origin proteins.

Suppose your dog has an amino acid deficiency. In that case, it will show a lack of appetite, impaired growth, and other symptoms such as gray hair on the coat, low hemoglobin levels, or decreased reproductive performance.

I recommend Hills Canine. As dogs and other pets generally grow older we notice drastic health changes and need to re-assess what is fed them to accommodate these changes, my vet suggested this product for two main reasons; The low sodium composition and the rich omega 3 and 6 fatty acid content. I have a 7 year old Rott and I incorporate this along with other supplements and a dynamic meal plan.
