Is Bone Broth Good For Dogs (Benefits Of Bone Broth For Dogs?)

As earlier discussed, well-prepared bone broth packs with lots of nutrients for your dog. Here are some of the bone broth benefits:

Good for Joint Health

Bone broth made from high-quality bones has lots of glucosamine and chondroitin. Both of these trace elements are vital in repairing worn-out joints. Again, the present hyaluronic acid helps lubricate and cushion the joints, preventing the occurrence or progression of osteoarthritis.

Gut Health

Dogs are natural scavengers, and often you will find them consuming nonfood items. With the consumption of harmful foods, your dog’s gut may get inflamed or break, and such leads to a condition called leaky gut. With the leaky gut condition, your dog’s bloodstream will be full of toxins and harmful bacteria as nothing is barring them from entering.

So is there a solution for that? Yes, bone broth for dogs has glycine, which reduces gut inflammation and helps heal the intestinal lining. (Benefits of bone broth)

Again, proline help repair this gut lining. Consequently, proline helps in managing both Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease. In these cases, you also have to check with the vet if the dog can have painkillers like meloxicam.

Wet food is good for dogs with kidney problems. The water in the broth is essential for kidney function. Bone broth is also low in protein. Even dogs with reduced appetites tend to like broth.

Complete Nutrients

Bone broth for dogs contains other essential elements like calcium, phosphorous, magnesium essential for your dog’s nerve health, improved sleep (magnesium), and proper muscle movement.

Can Dogs Have Store-Bought Bone Broth?

Yes, dogs can have store-bought bone broth. However, ensure you buy broth made of quality bones, and it’s of high standards.

What You Need To Consider Before You Purchase Bone Broth

Even though many companies make commercial bone broth for dogs, some may cut corners by using low-quality ingredients or include artificial ingredients to cut costs but charge you high.

So what should you check before you resort to store-bought bone broth for dogs?

Consider Bone Broth With Human-Grade Ingredients

Human-grade ingredients are safer for your dog as compared to feed-grade ingredients.

Bone Broth Should Have No Artificial Flavors

Avoid store-bought bone broth that uses chemically synthesized flavors. Most of these chemically synthesized flavors are carcinogenic. Like homemade bone broth, commercial bone broth for dogs should have natural flavors that will be good for your dog’s taste buds and tummy.

The Life Stage of Your Dog

When purchasing the best bone broth for your dog, look at the labeling. For example, is the bone broth good for small, medium, or large dogs? Or is the broth suitable for all life stages.

If possible, consider bone broth for dogs set for all life stages.

The Packaging

Check for bone broth that has good packaging. The packaging should be easy to open and pour out the contents without scattering them all over the place. Also, the packaging should not leak out the contents when in storage.

The Price Factor

What’s your budget? You need to look for bone broth that won’t strain your pockets or be hard to manage. Also, be wary; let not the price deceive you. A high price doesn’t translate to high quality. Although most people associate a high price with premium products, some brands may short charge you by including low-quality ingredients in their bone broth but still charge you high. With that, you need to be cautious.

How to Make Bone Broth for Dogs: Dog Bone Broth Recipe?

Ingredients:

  • Water,
  • raw bones (chicken, beef),
  • stockpot,
  • vegetables,
  • raw apple cider vinegar

Steps of making bone broth:

  1. Place raw bones inside the stockpot
  2. Add water to this stockpot till the bones are covered with water. The water should be above 2-3 inches. Then add 3-4 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar.
  3. Apple cider vinegar is included as it derives all the beneficial ingredients from the bones.
  4. Let the ingredients start cooking until they start boiling; after boiling, lower the heat and simmer for 12-24 hrs. Chicken bones need to be simmered for 12-14 hrs. Whereas beef bones can simmer for 24-48 hours as they are harder than chicken bones.
  5. When simmering, remember to skim any foam that may form to ensure you don’t get a cloudy bone broth.
  6. 3-4 hrs before the bone broth for dogs is ready; you can add fresh vegetables or herbs. It’s also at this point; you can sprinkle turmeric to add flavor.
  7. After the simmering is over, you can remove all cooked bones and solid vegetable stalks that now have no nutritional value.

Note: don’t be tempted to stir the broth when making bone broth.

Later you can store it in a fridge for cooling. Afterward, you will remove the layer of fat that forms on top.

You can use bone broth also as a travel option. The water in the broth will hydrate your dog, the nutrients, and the taste will keep the dog happy. You can use a portable dog water bottle for that.

I tried making mine but concluded I don’t have neither the time nor the patience for this so I skipped it entirely. The vet recommended we add some to his kibble for joint support, he’s a 10-year old Dachshund so he needs all the help he can get. Thanks for the roundup, will check the reviews and pick one, let’s hope Starky likes the taste.

  2. Nevaeh

Salt content is a big issue for us. Poor doggo developed kidney problems so we have to be super careful with salt. From what I can see the Strawfield powder is salt-free, I’m thinking we should start with this and see how he feels. The chicken might be an issue but considering how small the dosage is I think we’ll be ok.
