Sometimes dogs eat grass because they don’t get the right ingredients from their food.
Lamb: An Excellent Source of Nutrients
This meat is an excellent protein source, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals for your dog. Lamb can be fresh in wet foods and pâtés or dry kibble usually contains lamb meal, a dried version of the meat.
Lamb meal is a much more popular option than fresh lamb. The main reason, it’s a more concentrated source of minerals, such as calcium. This means that you need to feed less lamb meal than fresh lamb to keep your dog happy and healthy. Feeding smaller amounts like this also helps prevent your pooch from becoming overweight.
Another benefit of a premium quality lamb meal is that it doesn’t go off as quickly as a fresh lamb. This will help you save money on lamb dog food, as you can buy large amounts and store it, safe knowing that it will still be fresh in several months.
Lamb is a good choice for a dog’s diet but there are also Best Low Phosphorus Dog Food that is beneficial for their health issues.
And it’s Tasty Too!
Although lamb-based dog foods are typically more expensive than the more traditional chicken-based foods, many pet owners believe that they are well worth the price. Lamb has quite a strong odor and taste. While this may be unappealing to their owners, dogs love this. Even the fussiest of eaters will eagerly munch down a lamb-based meal.
Is Rice Good for Dogs Every Day?
That all sounds great, right? Now let’s consider the second ingredient, rice. You may think of your dog as a meat-eater, but other food items can make up an important part of their diet. Plain, white rice will fill your canine more than meat does, and is an excellent second ingredient to their lamb-based food.
Maintains a Healthy Digestive System
Plain, white rice is especially good for dogs with sensitive tummies. It is easy to digest and low in fiber, which will keep your pup’s stomach ache at bay. Rice has even been shown to treat and prevent diarrhea. So, if you want to keep your dog’s digestive system happy and healthy, white rice is certainly the way to go!
You can also feed your pooch lamb meal brown rice, and it is a common ingredient in lamb and rice dog food. It is much higher in fiber than white rice, something that may be essential for pups with certain health conditions, such as obesity. However, if your dog is prone to diarrhea, nutritionists generally recommend white rice over brown by vets.
Take a look at dog training books.
Some Problems with Rice
However, there are two downfalls to the grain you should consider. Rice contains a lot of carbs. Just like people, essential nutrient leads to significant weight gain in dogs. If you want to feed your pup lamb and rice dog food, read the feeding instructions carefully. Stick to the recommended portions on the label.
The second problem is that white rice can raise your dog’s blood sugar levels. Therefore, the grain may not be appropriate for diabetic dogs. You should ask your vet before changing their diet to one that contains rice.
This rarely poses a problem for healthy dogs, but keep an eye out for the symptoms of diabetes. These include drinking more fresh water than usual and losing weight.
Good for Dogs with Allergies
The biggest selling point of lamb and rice dog food is its low allergenic potential. This is, essentially, a fancy way of saying that few dogs are allergic to the ingredients. Similar to humans, dogs can be allergic to a wide variety of food. The most common culprits are chicken, beef, and dairy products. Certain grains, such as corn, can also cause allergies in canines.
Symptoms of food-associated allergies in dogs range from itchy skin and hives to ear and paw infections that just don’t seem to go away. If your dog suffers from allergic reactions to his or her food, the best treatment is to change their diet.
The Science Proves It!
This is where the lamb and rice food comes in. A study in 1994 tested how dogs with food allergies reacted to different diets. The results showed that commercial lamb and rice dog food was the best option for these pups. 65% had no symptoms at all after switching to the diet.
Vets even take advantage of the low allergenic potential of lamb and rice food diets. When dogs are tested for food allergies, they are initially fed fresh lamb and rice to clear up any symptoms. Other ingredients are gradually introduced to test if the pooch is allergic to each one individually.
That sounds fantastic! Unfortunately, there is still a slight risk of your canine having an allergy to a lamb and rice diet. The study from 1994 that I mentioned earlier found that 3 of the 20 dogs had worse symptoms after switching to the diet. So, although lamb and rice are an excellent choice for most dogs with allergies, owners should be careful if their pup is especially sensitive.
The Taurine Issue
Despite all the benefits of lamb and rice dog food, there is one major downfall associated with this combination of ingredients. A study, conducted in 2003 to test the nutritional value of various dog foods. The researchers found that when dogs ate a store-bought lamb meal and rice dog food; they had a significantly lower amount of taurine in their blood compared to dogs that had other types of food.
But what is taurine, and is it important for your dog? Taurine is an amino acid, a building block for proteins. It’s well known among vets that cats cannot create taurine on their own, and it must be added to their food. However, we still do not definitively know whether dogs need extra taurine in their diet. Because of this, there is no legal requirement to add nutrient to commercial lamb dog foods.
Taurine Deficiency in Dogs
More and more vets recognize that taurine deficiency can be an issue for some dogs. It can cause problems in the heart, eyes, and kidneys. Some purebred pups, including golden retrievers and chihuahuas, are more prone than others to suffer from a lack of taurine.
If you still want to feed your dog a lamb and rice diet, but are concerned about your best friend getting enough taurine, all is not lost! Your vet can easily test your dogs’ blood to double-check that they have enough of the nutrient in their diet. If they diagnose your pooch with a taurine deficiency, it is usually easily treated by feeding additional taurine supplements with their food.
Now you are ready to pick the best lamb based dog food
Hopefully, you now feel more confident about making an informed decision when choosing great lamb dog food for your best canine buddy.
Lamb and rice dog food is an excellent choice for many dogs, even those that are sensitive to most other foods because of digestive issues or allergies.
As with all foods, it is best to consult with your vet before changing your pup’s diet. And always remember to introduce their new food gradually by mixing it with their old food initially. This way pet parents can switch even a picky eater to a new pet food.
However, most dogs will switch over to lamb and rice food with zero issues, and your vet will, without a doubt, be delighted that you are being so vigilant about what you’re feeding your pooch.

Overall, the ingredients are healthy and good, with lamb and lamb meal listed as the first two ingredients. There is a massive variety of natural vitamin sources from blueberries to seaweed, as well as added taurine. Reviews for this product are mostly positive, with owners praising the food for clearing up their dog’s allergy issues such as itchy skin and ears. This food is also excellent for picky eaters.

My dog is very picky when it comes to her meals. I tried several options; some she rejected instantly. and others she eventually became fed up with within a few months. About a year ago, my vet recommended James Wellbeloved Adult Lamb and Rice Kibble. Surprisingly she’s been on that ever since with no issues. Along with her supplements, I noticed her coat became shinier and well formed.
Great choice! Sometimes you have to try different meats, and other options to find the dog food your pet will love. Then you can stick to it for a long time.
